Exclusion Crisis
The attempt to exclude James, Duke of York, later James II, from succeeding to the English throne because he was a Catholic. After the unmasking of the Popish Plot the Whigs tried in three successive parliamentary sessions to force through a bill to alter the succession but all three attempts (1679, 1680, 1681) failed. The Whig opposition eventually triumphed at the Glorious Revolution.
