The Higgs Boson Particle: How Should We As Christians Respond?

There has been much in the press and on social networking sites during the past 24 hours about the partial sighting of the Higgs Boson Particle.

Unsurprisingly, both Christians and Atheists have dug themselves into their trenches on opposing sides of the debating battlefield with neither willing to cede ground. This is because both parties are arguing from a standpoint of partial ignorance of the other’s viewpoint.

The Atheists have, once again, used the Catholic Church’s treatment of Galileo after his discovery of the Earth revolving around the Sun nearly four hundred years ago as reason to denounce all questioning Christians today. It is both unfair and misleading to claim that millions of modern Christians hold the same scientific beliefs as the upper hierarchy of the Catholic Church several centuries ago. Atheists have also, as predicted, blurred the lines between historical science and observable or experimental science in order to denounce Christians and their worldview as bad science. But, the dispute between the two sides is focussed on historical science ie; how the universe and the world as we know it came into being. This is entirely different to experimental and observable science which is used to understand the workings of the universe today and forms the basis of medical and technological developments. Whether one believes in the theory of evolution and the big bang theory or not does not affect one’s understanding of or ability to use observable science in the lab or everyday life. Finally, they have re-iterated the difference between the definitions of “theory” in scientific and non-scientific parlance because some Christians stick rigidly to the view that evolution is just a theory because it hasn’t been proven as per the non-scientific definition of theory (more on that later).

That being said, it is understandable to a certain extent, that Atheists would use the example of Galileo. After all the Catholic Church did get it wrong. Their dogmatism was partially based on their belief that Galileo’s hypothesis went against scripture. But is this the case? For example Psalm 93:1 reads: The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Whilst the Earth is not entirely motionless it does move in a fixed and constant orbit and remains tilted on a permanent axis. Both these factors enable life to be sustained upon the planet and any slight deviation would mean that life could no longer exist here. The Earth is indeed therefore, established, so that it cannot be moved. The Catholic’s second argument against Galileo was based upon their geocentric worldview which held that the Earth was the centre of the universe and that everything revolved around us, but that is unscriptural and based on the writings of Aristotle. Their view was fuelled by a fallible misinterpretation of the scriptures and bad science. Galileo’s genuine astronomical observations simply furthered our knowledge of the universe and posed no threat to the Christian worldview.

In the years following Darwin’s publication of “On The Origin Of Species” some Christians sought to denounce his theory of evolution by asserting that species have been fixed since creation and are no longer arising today. Again this is bad science and at odds with what we observe today. It is also based upon a misinterpretation of the meaning of “kinds” in Genesis. The observation of new species arising within their own kinds today does not prove Darwin’s theories nor does it disprove the Biblical creation account. There are many perfectly sound, scientifically based, reasons why Christians can and should adhere to the literal understanding of the creation and global catastrophic flood accounts as found in Genesis; too many to go into here but I would recommend that anyone wishing to investigate further visit Answers In Genesis. They are an organisation of highly qualified scientists who are also Christians who are producing a valuable resource of scientific information that highlights many flaws in the secular worldview of the origin of the universe and how the world came to be as we know it. The theory of evolution and the age of the Earth as billions of years old is far from proven despite what secular scientists proclaim. In fact the opposite is true. Dating methods invented in the last century are pointing to a young Earth that is merely a few thousand years old just like the Bible tells us. The scientists are admitting this to themselves in their own journals and have been for several decades but they are not yet willing to tell the rest of us.

Christians who claim that evolution is just a theory and should be dismissed as such are providing a flimsy argument because the scientific community conveniently offers an alternative definition. In science, a theory is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning, especially one that has been tested and confirmed as a general principle helping to explain and predict natural phenomena. Based upon this definition it is far better to counter secular science by applying their own terms and testing their explanation of evolution and an old Earth through good scientific methodology in order to show that their theories are not scientifically valid rather than arguing about the differing definitions of theory. Indeed much “evidence” for an old Earth is based upon unproven assumptions and factors that cannot be observed because the scientists were not there to observe the events taking place. And the experiments are producing results that counter their interpretations.

As we can see, Christians sometimes provide the Atheists’ ammuntion for them by making judgment calls without any understanding of the facts. In the case of the Higgs Boson Particle many Christians are reading their newspapers and taking what they are reading at face value with no real knowledge of the subject. In my view, the discovery of the Higgs Boson Particle, would simply add to our understanding of the universe and how it operates but will do nothing to increase our knowldedge of its origins. And therefore, it will not disprove the Biblical account of creation so Christians have nothing to fear from this news. The Higgs Boson Particle is part of a particle physics theory. The theory suggests that this particle which has yet to be found will explain why everything has mass and will prove that the big bang theory of the origins of the universe is correct. Scientists have been searching for the particle for about 50 years. The claim that this particle will prove the big bang theory is correct is a false one as the big bang hypothesis itself has many problems which scientists are unable to explain. For example if the universe came into existence by the method proposed the universe would consist of equal amounts of matter and antimatter. But the known universe is made up almost entirely of matter while there is hardly any antimatter, which is a good thing because when antimatter collides with matter the two cancel each other out and destroy themselves.

We must not panic whenever a new scientific discovery or theory is announced. We must examine it both scientifically to establish whether it is genuine and sound through observable and experimental methods and scripturally to ascertain whether it clashes with God’s Word. If it goes against God’s Word we can rest assured that it is another flawed man made hypothesis that will be disproved or superseded and confidently seek to prove it as false through good science. If it either backs up scripture or does not affect scripture then we are at liberty to accept it as a postive advancement in our knowledge of the amazing universe that our awesome God created and of which we are priviliged to be a part. Either way fear is not an option because it simply furthers the devil’s cause and promotes his lies.

Jars of Christ

I have just been washing used jars and bottles to prepare them for recycling. As I was removing the labels, which needed a lot of soaking and work to remove, I was given a vision from God.

These jars are like us when we become Christians. Inside we are clean because we have been washed clean of our sins by the Blood of the Lamb. But on the outside we still see the old label “sinner” which represents our old life. And while that label remains there we continue to behave as if we are still sinners even though that is no longer what is in the jar. As Christians it is Christ who is in the jar and we need a new label on the outside so that both we and others can recognise what the jar contains. But in order to attach the new label we must first remove the old one.

In order to replace the label on a jar we need to begin by recognising that the label is wrong because the contents have now changed. Then we have to soak it in the water to gradually ease off the old label that is glued solidly to the outside. For us this means recognising who we are in Christ and how that changes our relationship with God. This means spending time everyday in God’s presence soaking up the Spirit and allowing Him to gradually wash away the old label so that He can replace it with the appropriate new one.

This is vital if we are to become mature Christians able to serve God fully and move into all the blessings He has for us.

Romans 6:1-14 (NIV)
Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
[6:1] What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? [2] By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? [3] Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
[5] If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. [6] For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,* that we should no longer be slaves to sin— [7] because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
[8] Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. [9] For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. [10] The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
[11] In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. [12] Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. [13] Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. [14] For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Romans 8:15-17 (NIV)
[15] For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.* And by him we cry, “Abba,* Father.” [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. [17] Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
