Stamford Bridge, Battle of

(25 September 1066)
A battle at a village on the River Derwent in Yorkshire, north-east England, in which Harold II of England defeated a large invading army under his exiled brother Tostig and the King of Norway,  Harald Hardrada, both of whom were killed. Harold’s army marched south from Stamford to face the Norman invasion and fight the Battle of  Hastings.
